Album Review - Distorted Reality | The Blacktones

- By Aftab Khan | Rating - 3/5

Black Sabbath are back. Their new album ‘13’ comes out very soon, on June 10th. The sound that Sabbath pioneered four decades ago (the genre creating self-titled debut album came out in 1970), came to be known as Heavy Metal. In the years that followed, this sound underwent many many transformations on the way to becoming faster, heavier, more extreme. Bands like Metallica pulled the sound forward in a different direction. The various genres and sub genres that metal nerds like to slot bands into today have grown complex and confusing. Sabbath itself would today be labeled ‘Doom metal’ or ‘Stoner metal’. One such band that falls into many sub-genres and is indirectly-if not directly- inspired by Sabbath, is Italian band The Blacktones.

Album Review - Moon Dust EP | Le Twan

— By Aftab Khan | Rating- 3.5/5

The Moon Dust EP comes attached with tags like ‘Nu-Disco’, ‘Electrofunk’ and ‘Indie –Dance’ and Le Twan largely delivers on these rather fancy tags, creating electronic chill music that straddles genres with ease.

Le Twan is the adopted moniker of Geneva, Switzerland born dj Antoine Gautier. Like a lot of electronic music producers before him, Antoine comes from a rock background. He began producing and djing at LA parties and events in the California desert in 2003. Having been a drummer in the Los Angeles indierock and metal scene, he brings a keen sense of rhythm and an indie quality to his electronic project. An influence or tendency towards chill music is also seen in his music.

The Moon Dust E.P. is out globally on 30-5-2013 on Mojear Records.

Jamsteady and it’s relevance in Kolkata’s Indie Music Scene

Guest post by Akash Sinha.

Slowly and steadily a new sonic movement has begun to take roots in Kolkata. Young musicians are exploring new idioms, new imagery and a different kind of sound. This is refreshing to say the least. As much as I love classic rock bands I can’t help but notice that somehow the image of the rocker in this city has not evolved from the leather jacket clad, long haired reveler.

Ganesh Talkies - the indie dance music cousin of Bollywood

This is an interview by Aniket Dutta of Tint, a Kolkata based rock band.

INTRODUCTION

Named as one of the ‘top acts to watch out for in 2013’ by Rolling Stone India, Ganesh Talkies blends alt-rock, reggae, ska and pop in a funky, twisted brew peppered with influences culled from cinema. The result is Bollywood’s quirk extreme kitsch meeting a dance-heavy ethos in the band’s sound and live vibe. Big on drama, GT frequently slips into theatre couture on stage; its infectious live energy moulded into the night’s theme.
